With proper handling, virtually no odor is produced. Odor formation when excrement mixes is caused by the release of gases such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane. Various bacteria and yeasts that decompose the nutrients are responsible for the noticeable odors. Therefore, the solids are covered with litter.
