The name says it all: Acomposting toilet(or dry toilet) separates liquids from solids. Urine is collected in a canister, while solids are manually covered. Composting toilets usually have an agitator (or are also called dry toilets with an electric agitator). Here, too, the materials are separated into two containers. Pre-composting takes place in the collection container with substrate (such as coconut fibers). This is done with the help of an agitator. If toilet paper is disposed of here, the crank mechanism quickly becomes blocked, and emptying must be done much sooner. The contents are then filled into compostable bags and disposed of with regular household waste. Composting is not entirely straightforward and is subject to certain regulations, depending on the region. For example, the contents of a composting toilet must rest for at least 24 months before they are fully humified. Odor formation is similar in both systems and is optimized with a fan.

The urine tank holds 9 liters in the freestanding TTT and 10 liters in the bench toilet. This is enough for two people for approximately 2-4 days. The solids container holds approximately 10-12 uses.
