FAQ
General questions about composting toilets
A separator insert separates liquids and solids. Urine is directed into the tank via our patented drain ring. Solids are collected in a separate container, which is lined with a garbage bag for easier disposal.
Our TTT system works without water, electricity, or chemicals. It requires no special films or bags. Water consumption while traveling is noticeably reduced. Self-sufficiency increases because emptying intervals are extended and you are no longer dependent on disposal stations. Pure urine can be disposed of in any toilet. Solids can be disposed of with regular household waste. We recommend adhering to local waste disposal regulations when traveling abroad.
No! Our TTT (toilet toilet) operates purely by gravity. However, we utilize the existing 12V power supply and have developed our own electronics that control the light, fan, and outdoor shower (submersible pump). The existing water line can also be used and converted into an outdoor shower . Both are optional but not necessary for the toilet to function.
The urine tank holds 9 liters in the freestanding TTT and 10 liters in the bench toilet. This is enough for two people for approximately 2-4 days. The solids container holds approximately 10-12 uses.
With proper handling, virtually no odor develops. Odor formation when excrement mixes is caused by the release of gases such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane. Various bacteria and yeasts, which decompose the nutrients, are responsible for the noticeable odors. Therefore, the solids are covered with litter. We recommend our activated carbon litter , as it absorbs moisture particularly effectively. Due to its high activated carbon content, it binds significantly more than coconut fibers or wood shavings. In the liquefied mass found in a cassette toilet, bacteria, yeasts, and the enzymes produced are especially active. Furthermore, exposure to air intensifies the odor. The typical urine odor arises primarily from the combination with water, especially with the dissolved calcium. The limescale that forms over time also contributes to the odor. Our Perfect TTT Urine Stone prevents limescale and odor formation. The longer urine is collected, the stronger the noticeable odor becomes. Therefore, our composting toilet has a maximum canister capacity of ten liters, which is sufficient for approximately two to four days. Generally speaking, odors increase with rising outside temperatures, so we always recommend using a fan.
Yes, of course. The kids might need to do some training and maybe slide back and forth a bit.
Whether it's a separating toilet , dry toilet, dry separating toilet, composting toilet, or crank toilet – they all follow the same principle: waste is collected separately into urine and solids containers using separating inserts. Drying is achieved by adding bedding material and/or using a fan . Composting and/or crank toilets – as the name partially suggests – have a crank. Before use, the bucket is filled with coconut fibers. After that, it's enough to crank it after each use – no additional bedding is needed. You could say: they are all separating toilets with one or two differences. Colloquially, the names are often used interchangeably. 😉
The name says it all: A separating toilet (or dry toilet) separates liquids from solids. Urine is collected in a canister, while solids are manually covered. Composting toilets usually have an agitator (or are also called dry toilets with an electric agitator). Here, too, the materials are separated into two containers. Pre-composting takes place in the collection container with substrate (such as coconut fibers). This is done with the help of an agitator. If toilet paper is disposed of here, the crank mechanism quickly becomes blocked, and the toilet needs to be emptied much sooner. The contents are then placed in compostable bags and disposed of with regular household waste. Composting is not entirely straightforward and is subject to certain regulations, depending on the region. For example, the contents of a composting toilet must rest for at least 24 months before they are fully humified. Odor formation is similar in both systems and is optimized with a fan.
Materials & Manufacturing
We manufacture our toilets from ABS plastic with a PMMA surface coating. Our washbasin extensions are made of polystyrene, also with a PMMA surface coating. Our flushing inserts are made of ABS plastic with a food-safe surface.
This is partly due to weight and cost considerations, but more importantly, it's unnecessary with a dry composting toilet, as these function without water. Porcelain bowls can be rinsed with water and (aggressive) cleaning agents. We don't need any of that here.
We manufacture all our products in Besigheim near Stuttgart. A great deal of manual work goes into assembling the Perfect TTT. We source the plastic from European manufacturers. We only purchase a few small parts from external suppliers.
Because Perfect Van developed the first fully functional dry composting toilet for motorhomes with external disposal, focusing on functionality and hygiene. We are constantly improving our products and offer unique features like the privacy screen – which is already being copied. All our toilets feature a patented drainage system. Our urine tank holds up to 10 liters and has overflow protection. Like the freestanding toilet, the bench toilet is also available in black and white. We manufacture to high standards in Germany and offer perfect products for you and your camper, making your travels more comfortable and relaxing.
Costs & Sources
Composting toilets are available in various price ranges: portable toilets or simple kits start at a few hundred euros, while fully equipped bench composting toilets with a control kit can cost up to five figures. The investment pays off through self-sufficient camping without chemicals and without using water.
This depends on the consumption of consumables such as litter, bags, etc.
We calculated an average value of 3 cents per toilet visit on the Perfect Van TTT .
No! You are not required to use our bags, litter, or any of our products when using the toilet. While we recommend our activated charcoal litter and urine blocks, as they have proven particularly effective in our tests, you are of course free to use your own products.
In our showroom in Besigheim (near Stuttgart), all our products can only be viewed by appointment. Direct purchase of the items is also possible by prior arrangement.
All our products can only be purchased directly through our online shop or through our installation partners . The Knaus washbasin extension is also available directly from Knaus.
We warn against other websites from overseas and the like - these are fake sites and are not Perfect Van!
Use & Disposal TTT
The optimal use of a composting toilet depends largely on the correct sitting position. Due to anatomical differences, this varies between women and men. Using a composting toilet is somewhat easier for men: sit down and let it flow. Women sometimes need to adjust their position slightly to effectively separate liquids and solids. However, thanks to our large separating insert and privacy flap, virtually no liquid gets into the solids container, and women quickly find the optimal sitting position.
Yes. If blood flows into the canister, the color of the contents may change. You may need to rinse it with water to keep the drainage holes clear. This will shorten the emptying interval. We recommend not using the urinary scale during this time.
Separate disposal is generally recommended. However, everything can also be collected in the solids container if it is disposed of with regular household waste. Adding a little more litter, running the fan continuously, and shortening the emptying interval are also options.
The toilet paper simply goes into the solids container with the other solids. Together with the bedding material, it ensures a dry consistency and prevents odors – special camping toilet paper is not necessary. This is another advantage of using a composting toilet.
For the sake of the environment, we always recommend disposing of urine in a toilet. Please empty your urine tank in restrooms or at disposal stations whenever using additives or cleaning agents. It is recommended to flush 2-3 times during emptying to dilute the pure urine. The bag from the solids container should be securely tied and disposed of with your regular household waste, as most of this is incinerated. Out of consideration for others: please avoid leaving waste compactors and bins in direct sunlight. This is another reason why a dry toilet is ideal: with a chemical toilet, the tank is rinsed several times with water. This is unnecessary when cleaning a dry toilet, as it does not require water.
Emptying intervals depend on usage: For two people, the urine canister usually lasts 2-3 days, the solids container 5-7 days. With the optional Control Kit, you can keep an eye on the fill level of your camping toilet. A thorough cleaning with Perfect TTT Spray is recommended weekly. With regular maintenance, the toilet remains hygienic and odor-free. Fun fact: Our toilets are made of ABS plastic with a PMMA surface coating. Unlike other composting toilets made of injection-molded, uncoated plastic, the Perfect TTT is therefore particularly easy to clean and thus very hygienic.
That happens 😉. Just use more litter and empty the solids container more often.
Using the TTT in winter is normally possible. As long as the vehicle is heated, the tank and solids container can remain in the vehicle. They only need to be emptied in freezing conditions and if the vehicle is unheated.
The TTT can be used normally even in summer. We generally recommend using a fan to remove moisture – and therefore odors – from the vehicle. This is especially important at high temperatures.
The Perfect TTT is splash-proof. However, if the toilet is positioned entirely within the shower area, water may enter due to our swivel mechanism (free rotation of the seat). In this case, we recommend separating the toilet with a shower curtain.
Cleaning & Hygiene of the TTT
For regular cleaning, our cleaning spray is included in the starter kit : Spray the separator insert and wipe it with a soft cloth. Remove any visible soiling immediately. Do not use solvent- or alcohol-based cleaners or abrasives (this also includes window cleaners or disinfectants/cleaners)! Hairspray, perfume, or nail polish remover should not come into contact with our products. This is another reason why a dry composting toilet is ideal: With a chemical toilet, the tank is rinsed several times with water. This is unnecessary with the "daily" cleaning of a dry composting toilet, as no water should enter the urine tank.
We recommend lining the solids container with two bags . This ensures that if a hole develops, nothing will contaminate the bucket, and the second bag can usually remain in the bucket. Alternatively, the bucket can simply be rinsed with water and allowed to dry thoroughly. When emptying, rinse the drain channel with water and dry it well, or clean it with cleaning spray.
During use, only empty the tank and do not add water. Adding our spray or, for example, Solbio to the tank further reduces odors and conditions it. We recommend cleaning the tank approximately every two weeks with water and Solbio or citric acid: Allow it to soak thoroughly and then rinse. If the lids are fully open, allow it to dry completely. Be sure to remove the membrane beforehand, as it is not acid-resistant.
Yes, because solids and liquids are not mixed. The advantage is that urine can be disposed of cleanly, while solids are stored dry, which helps reduce odors. Our patented drainage channel ensures that everything remains hygienic – from use to emptying to cleaning. We use plastic with a PMMA surface sealant. This prevents bacteria from penetrating the plastic. Our clean design offers further advantages: no toilet seat, no edges or crevices where bacteria can accumulate. Thanks to our privacy flap, the solids container remains largely dry. Moisture is transported outwards by the ventilation system.
Our Perfect TTT stone set ensures a fresh scent and a pleasant indoor climate. High-performance microorganisms break down urine and limescale, preventing deposits in the toilet and tank. Our stone also prevents unpleasant odors. Simply place the stone, with its integrated sieve, directly onto the drain in the urine area. The sieve also prevents foreign particles from clogging the drain. After your vacation, the stone can simply remain in the toilet and will release a fresh scent as it dries. Simply rinse it briefly with fresh water after your trip and allow it to dry. When using the urine stone: Always empty your urine tank at toilets or disposal stations.
Please note: Never use a conventional toilet block from the drugstore in the Perfect TTT. These blocks contain chlorine and dyes that will damage the plastic!
No, absolutely not! Conventional toilet blocks from drugstores contain chlorine and dyes that can damage the plastic of the Perfect TTT!
Generally, yes. The stone was specifically developed for our toilet and is most effective there. This effect only occurs when it comes into direct contact with urine. If urine spills or wets the walls, its effectiveness may be reduced. Toilets made of injection-molded, uncoated plastic with a shallow urine collection area are particularly problematic. Models with a splash guard or odor trap are ideal for further odor reduction. We cannot guarantee the stone's functionality with other types of composting toilets.
What do I need?
We recommend using a fan. Our fan kit with Door Connect (necessary when accessing through the inspection hatch) is designed for continuous 24/7 operation. The fan consumes approximately 0.54 Wh.
Yes, existing SOG fans can usually be used. The exception is the SOG ceiling fan. The wiring for this is so complex that we disable the SOG ceiling fan and install our own. We offer suitable adapter pieces for all common SOG systems.
The TTT (Traffic Shower) can function without electricity. However, we recommend using the Control Kit and connecting it to a ventilation system. If a SOG (Sustained Air Flow) system is not present, the Air Kit should also be used. If there is no external vent, the Door Connect , which can be integrated into the flap, is required. We recommend the Starter Kit as a consumable. If access to the water line T-junction is not possible, we advise installing a shut-off valve or our Outdoor Shower Kit .
We recommend our activated charcoal litter made from 40% organic biochar , wood fibers, rock dust, and organic compost. This mixture makes the litter highly efficient at binding unpleasant odors and excess moisture. It also initiates the decomposition process. While other types of litter can be used for binding, they are not as effective at reducing odors. Due to its high activated charcoal content, it binds significantly more than, for example, coconut fibers or wood shavings.
We recommend our Starter Kit when converting your TTT. This includes a 20-liter litter bag (approx. 11 kg), a set of three litter stones with a carrier sieve, a cleaning spray, a roll of 15 solids bin bags, and two anti-slosh membranes. All parts are also available individually in our shop . We also recommend the pouring spout , which allows for splash-free emptying of the tank.
We recommend using standard, tear-resistant 20-liter garbage bags made from recycled material to avoid producing additional plastic. In our shop, you'll find suitable garbage bags made from at least 90% post-consumer waste (PE) and certified with the Blue Angel ecolabel. This way, at least no new plastic is produced.
Instructions and assembly
Yes, that's possible too. Here you'll find a list of our certified installation partners.
Yes, our toilets are designed to allow for easy conversion of existing Thetford and Dometic cassette toilets. We have extensive experience with such conversions. Please contact us beforehand.
You generally don't need this for a Perfect TTT – unless you're converting it into an outdoor shower . If you don't want an outdoor shower at the flap, we recommend removing the water line. Ideally, remove it all the way to the T-junction and replace it with a straight connector. If the T-junction is inaccessible, a shut-off valve should be installed to allow you to drain the line regularly. This prevents stagnant water flow, bacterial growth, and also damage from freezing.
Hold the flap, loosen the rotary handle (like a screw), pull the handle out of the guide, the flap is free and can be carefully removed upwards.
If necessary, turn the flap and carefully (hand-tight) screw the handle back in in reverse order.
This can happen because the screws gradually tighten over time due to movement of the lid. In this case, simply loosen the two Allen screws on the lid slightly.
Washbasin extension
No, the extensions only fit as described on the respective product page. It can also happen that even with the same mobile home, there are variations in the factory installation. For example, the faucet might be mounted so close to the sink that the extension still won't fit.
Especially in panel vans from all common conversion manufacturers, the sinks are often very small. Beard hair and water end up everywhere but in the sink. This is where our sink extensions come in: they enlarge the sink.
No, our extensions can be installed and removed in seconds without tools. No drilling is required, nor is any modification or screwing required to the sink.
The sink extensions are made of plastic (polystyrene). This material is not resistant to solvent-based liquids (e.g., hairspray, nail polish remover, or certain perfumes).
Sink insert & cutting board
Unfortunately not. Our sink inserts only fit the sinks described on the respective product page. We offer sinks for Can and Dometic sinks. However, our portfolio is constantly expanding, and we are primarily working on new models for Dometic sinks.
Our sink inserts are precision-made to protect the original sink from scratches and mechanical damage. This allows dishes to remain in the sink even while driving. The insert also serves as a washing-up bowl, for example, at the campsite or in front of the vehicle. We have also integrated a drainage slope to ensure complete drainage. The drain is positioned directly above the original drain valve. The sink inserts are temperature-resistant up to approximately 80°C.
Our sink inserts are made of 3 mm thick material – this reduces the loss of space to a minimum.
Since no separate washing-up bowl is needed on board, the storage space in the cupboard remains completely unaffected. The sink itself is usually carried empty in everyday use – the sink insert therefore utilizes this space efficiently without requiring any additional room.
The sink insert is made of high-quality, black, food-safe ABS plastic. The sink's drain plug fits into the insert and is therefore not included. The cutting board is made of 12 mm thick, textured black PE plastic and is food-safe.
When camping, it's best to wash dishes with biodegradable dish soap in your built-in sink or – even better – in a sink insert from Perfect Van. This insert is heat-resistant up to approximately 80°C. Here's a little tip: Use the pasta water to pre-rinse pots and plates – this saves water. Always dispose of dirty water in designated drains, never in nature.
We do a lot of testing and experimenting – including with wood as a cutting board. Our products are milled, and that's precisely where the challenge lies: So far, we haven't found a wood material that can be milled precisely, proves itself as a cutting board for everyday use, and simultaneously strikes a sensible balance between price, weight, and quality. For our purposes, wood doesn't yet meet these requirements – that's why we're using PE.
Scratches on a cutting board are perfectly normal and unavoidable. It's simply the nature of the thing. As the name suggests, it's a cutting board – and it's typically used with a sharp kitchen knife. With every cut, the blade slightly penetrates the surface, leaving marks. That's precisely what a cutting board is for: to protect the knife and prevent damage to the worktop or table.
Whether high-quality or inexpensive, every cutting board that is used regularly will get scratches. Signs of wear are particularly noticeable on soft materials like wood or plastic, but this is actually desirable. A board that accepts cuts also helps keep the knife sharp for longer.
In short: Cutting boards with scratches are a sign of normal use and not of poor quality. Anyone who works in the kitchen at home is familiar with these marks from their own simple boards – they're simply part of the process and show that the board is doing its job. Scratches and cuts on the board do not constitute grounds for a complaint.
